What is Denim?

Did you know that it was once used as a sailcloth? Denim is a French word Serge de Nimes, which refers to Nimes. Denimes stands for 'of Nimes'. Denim has been incorporated into our daily lives like nothing else. Cotton fibers are used to make denim. You can find out more about Cotton fabric and how it is made.

Denim fabric is made with a twill fabric weave.  Denim has a unique characteristic there is a diagonal pattern visible on the fabric's face that makes it stand out from other cotton fabrics. This diagonal pattern is created by a special twill weave. The twill weave pattern is used to weave fibers on a loom.

1. 100% Cotton Denim

This is normal denim fabric that you can use in many ways to make the various types described below. This fabric is durable, tough wearing, and versatile.

2. Raw Denim

This fabric is not washed after it has been dyed. This is done to make the fabric soften and prevent shrinkage. This is what we refer to in sewing as prewashing. Also known as unsanforized jeans Raw denim is smoother than jeans and doesn't have the distressed look.

Natural fading and stress will give you the distressed look you desire. Natural fading and stress are more appealing than factory-made distressed looks. Before sewing or wearing raw denim, it is important to wash it first.

3. Sanforized Denim

This denim fabric is not subject to shrinkage after washing. Sanforized denim is used for most other denim than raw.

4. Colors of Denim

There are two types of colored denim: blue and the rest. Indigo dying is used to give denim the blue or close-to-blue color. Indigo dying allows denim to be dyed in other colors, such as black, pink, mustard, green, and red.

5. Stretch Denim

This is denim that has been infused with stretchy synthetic fiber such as spandex or Lycra. It gives it stretch. The fabric's percentage of elastane will determine how stretchy it is.

6. Selvedge Denim

This is a denim fabric that has edges finished with a band of orange or red. This is also known as self-edge or selvage jeans. It is widely believed that this denim is of higher quality than other types. Japan is the largest producer of this type of denim fabric.

7. Crushed Denim

This Denim fabric is made from a weave that is treated to look permanently wrinkled or broken.

8. Waxed Reverse Denim

It is a denim fabric with a wax coating on the reverse for water resistance. This fabric is used mainly to make bags and outdoor gear.

9. Acid Wash Denim

This is also known as marble denim. This is a denim fabric that has been treated with chlorine-soaked pumice stones. The stones' abrasion causes the fabric to lose its color and creates a striking contrast with the indigo. The fabric is then rinsed and softened before drying.

10. Poly Denim

This fabric is made with Denim and a small number of Polyester fibers. This fabric is extremely soft to the touch, easy to care for, and stretchy. It is popular to make jackets, shirts, and hats. Denim's durability, smoothness, and finish are enhanced by the polyester blend.

11. Ecru Denim

This is denim that has not been dyed with indigo. This fabric is a natural denim color and has not been dyed.

12. Bull Denim

Because of its 3*1 weave construction, this denim fabric is extremely durable and strong. Although it isn't as durable as canvas, bull denim fabric is extremely durable and heavy.

13. Thermo Jeans

Double denim is another name for this fabric. This fabric is made from lightweight denim and is glued to denim. This fabric gives the garment the appearance of being lined.
